New York is often a central theme when it comes to Christmas films, a melting pot of cultures and influences. Carol is set during the early 50s and uses the natural designs of time to help tell the emotional story of a love affair between two women.
The film is heavily inspired by post WWII America, with muted greens, bland beiges and browns, textured patterns and pops of red to create a slightly stale yet alluring ambience. Sparse but statement mid-century furniture adorns Carol’s home showing a period where quality took precedence over quantity.
Not only are these basic colours and designs part of the decade that are not often highlighted, they help draw attention to the aching love story being told.
